History of Canoeing

In many places of the world, canoeing has long been a popular mode of travel and leisure, making it one of the oldest pastimes available. Canoeing gives us the opportunity to be active on the water while remaining a cheap and exciting activity.

This versatile use has made canoeing into what it is today. An evolved sport performed by many individuals around the globe, whether professionally or recreationally. Before it became the exciting hobby and sport that it is today, canoeing developed from a long history. As a result, it becomes crucial to identify people or individuals that spearheaded this long history. And it starts with knowing who invented canoeing.

Who Invented Canoeing?

The development of canoeing as a recreation and sport begins its history in the 1860s, following an English-Scottish Lawyer, Barrister John Macgregor. John Macgregor was a prominent writer, lawyer, sportsman, and traveler. Consequently, he studied the ancient kayaks used by the Inuits and decided to employ the services of Searle’s of Lambeth, boatbuilders, to build him his first canoe in 1865.

The boat’s designs featured decked sailing canoes that had masts and sails. He took these boats to the rivers and lakes, paddling them throughout Europe and the Middle East.

John promoted these boats through his many lectures and books. Also, in one of his many books describing his craft, John revealed that he got his original idea after seeing the canoes in ‘North America and the Kamschatka.’

In 1866, other sportsmen and enthusiasts created the’ Canoe Club’ due to his lectures and books describing his many adventures on boats. It became the Royal Canoe Club in 1873.

One of the prominent members of the club was the Prince of Wales. This club held its first Paddling Regatta in 1867 with fifteen participating canoes. Though the adoption of canoeing as a sport was slow, other British canoe clubs soon emerged.

The Clyde Canoe Club was one of the first, appearing in 1876. The club grew in strength and was responsible for the ‘C’ class sailing canoe until World War II. It, however, still exists but has diverted to canoe fishing.

Soon, canoeing began to spread across Europe quickly. Following its quick expansion, in 1936, the British Canoe Union was established to govern the UK’s canoeing activities. In 1871, the first American canoe club was established in North America but later fell under the control of the American Canoe Association, along with all other existing clubs.

History of Canoeing as Recreation

Consequently, people were able to explore remote waters and discover new water areas, as adventurous war veterans who could not settle into city life took trips on their canoes in search of some excitement. Also, in recent times, recreational canoeing has continued to grow more popular.

History of Canoeing as a Sport

Canoeing as a competitive sport emerged in the 19th century. Canoeing was introduced into the Paris Olympics in 1924 as a demonstration sport but soon died down after some years.

The world took a break from any and all sporting activities with the emergence of World War II in 1939, with canoeing making a comeback at the 1948 London Olympics.
